Drum Circles Across America
Drum circles are becoming increasingly popular. They offer social outlets, while at the same time, supporting a worthwhile hobby. The emphasis on individual drum circles can vary, from ethnic events, like those that focus on samba music, to therapeutic groups for stress relief, to community drum circles, the main function of which is to create a sense of community.
The neo-pagan drum circle is the most well-known type of drum circle. At spiritual festivals, the drum circle is used as a part of several ceremonies. The drummers play in order to create a magical experience, particularly at night, while singers and dancers perform around a bonfire. Summer and winter solstice celebrations are some of the biggest opportunities for drum circles, as the pagans believe that they are “drumming up the sun.”
The community circle is a favorite for the drummer looking for a non-religious drumming opportunity. It is a casual experience, usually with a group of friends that can be used for celebration or recreation. They typically take place in parks or conference rooms. These events are also used as team building activities for corporations.
The Central Florida Drum Circle is a social drum circle that focuses on the connections between people regardless of age or race. It is one of the biggest drum circles, with 537 members who meet up to play and build relationships with each other through the magic of music.
One of the largest community circles in the south is hosted by the Atlanta Drum Circle Meet-Up Group. Close to 450 percussionists join to celebrate music and fellowship. The group emphasizes the therapeutic aspects of drumming, by reducing stress and encouraging mediation while playing. This group is great for those interested in gaining culture while indulging in a fun hobby.
Austin, Texas is home to another of the largest drum circles in the world. The Active Fun/Peace Loving Hippies is built to provide community and a place to speak the group member’s beliefs. Additionally, this group has over 400 participants who are hand drumming enthusiasts.
Arizona’s largest monthly circle, the Burning Bush Drum Circle has more than 375 hand drummers involved. Local business sponsor the event, where drummers, tambourine players, belly dancers and bagpipers get together to play music and dance, while fire eaters perform. This group, hosted in Phoenix, Arizona has been meeting every month for two years.
The New York City Meet-Up Group is comprised of 375 hand drummers. The group uses percussive techniques and ethnic rhythms from the Middle East, the Mediterranean and the East. Additionally, the group does innovative synthesis with poetry reading and story telling, accompanied by the hand drums.
The Knoxville Area Pagans’ Meet-Up is a Tennessee-based group known for spiritual drum circle. Though they practice pagan religion, the group practices and performances are open to anyone in the area with an open mind. The Knoxville Area Pagans’ Meet Up has over three hundred members, who are encouraged to share their religion while making new friends, as well as music.
Cultural Drums
Wood djembe drum, ‘Kente Pillar’Today’s Price: $348.99
Poised in the hands of a rhythm conductor, the African djembe drum comes to life as sound travels from the taut goat skin head, plummets to the depths of the body, resonates in intense waves of power, then exits the drum magically, drawing the gathered crowd into its alluring beat. This djembe is hand-carved from wood by Joseph Aboagye and wrapped in patterned cotton kente cloth to enhance its visual appeal. An exquisite example of percussive craftsmanship, this instrument makes a wonderful gift for the dedicated musician.
To play, sit on the edge of a chair with ankles crossed, the top of the drum fitting neatly between the knees as the base of the drum rests behind the heels. This way the drum is angled away from the player. Sitting up straight with hands resting on the drum’s playing surface, the wrists should become flat and be in position to create the standard djembe sounds. Djembes produce three basic sounds: bass, tone, and slap.
BASS: With the hand flat and fingers together, place the hand at the dimension of two fists above the center of the playing surface. Allow the hand to strike and bounce back to the original position above the center.
TONE: This is the high-pitched sound produced by striking the top surface nearest the edge with firmly placed fingers.
SLAP: Strike the playing surface’s edge first with the heel of the hand, and then allow the fingers to naturally bounce down towards the drum’s center.
Wood djembe drum, ‘Elephant Village’Today’s Price: $317.95
Evoking the majestic African savannah, an elephant trumpets with pride on the outskirts of a Ghanaian village. Robert K. Ghartey crafts a handsome djembe drum from seasoned tweneboa wood. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and a macramé cord can be slung over the shoulder.
Wood djembe drum, ‘African Rhythm’Today’s Price: $289.95
Bold West African rhythms race around the smooth contours of tweneboa wood. Samuel Coleman crafts a handsome drum that he names Frekyiwa, or “rhythm bell” in the Akan language. He sculpts the drum from tweneboa wood, finished in mansion polish. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and a macramé nylon cord can be slung over the shoulder. An Adrinkra symbol known as Nyinkyim adorns the base; it means “dynamism and versatility.”
Wood kpanlogo drum, ‘Unity’Today’s Price: $289.95
A dynamic design and richly-carved surface distinguish this handsome drum by Samuel Coleman. Its merging Ashanti biakuye symbols express unity and oneness. The kpanlogo drum is a revered element in the music and culture of the Ga tribe in Ghana’s Greater Accra region, marking the rhythm for the traditional kpanlogo dance. However, its characteristic deep, loud sound makes it a popular instrument throughout West Africa. Coleman crafts this beautiful drum of tweneboa wood, affixing its calfskin drum head to wooden pegs with stout ropes. It is burnished to a rich sheen with brown and mansion polish.
An ideal gift for the world music aficionado, its joyous rhythms fill any environment with the spirit of biakuye.

Nyoman Karsa – Wood Sculpter
“This has been such a great year for me, thanks to people from many different countries. Thanks for submitting so many testimonials about my work. May this year bring you all the happiness and good fortune that you have brought to my family.
“My name is Nyoman Karsa and I was born on December 31, 1967. I learned woodcarving from my father and the senior artists of my village, for example, the famous Wayan Winten. I have worked in my own art studio and shop since 1987.
“I usually carve sculptures from ebony, suar, crocodile, and hibiscus woods. Each of the woods has specific characteristics of color, durability, and aroma. Ebony comes from Sulawesi, while the others grow locally. Mass media and the everyday traditional lifestyle of our environment and community are the sources of my inspiration. Some of my pieces deal with traditional dances, the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata, sports, animals, and abstract figures.
“When creating a sculpture, I first see it in my mind, making an image of how it would look on a log or a piece of wood. I make a draft on the wood piece, chiseling the initial form and detailing the parts, finishing it off by smoothing and polishing.
“I wish success for Novica and the world’s artists!”

Spreading mighty wings, a majestic eagle prepares to take to the sky. Nyoman Karsa depicts a regal bird, carving the powerful contours from suar wood. Fine details distinguish this masterful work, from the soft feathers to the intelligent eyes.
Wood sculpture, ‘One Heart’Today’s Price: $36.49
A couple leans close to gaze into one another’s eyes. Their bodies meld to form a heart. “This sculpture symbolizes eternal love,” Balinese artisan Nyoman Karsa confides. He carves the signature piece from sleek suar wood.
Wood sculpture, ‘Love of My Life’ Today’s Price 49.99
Blissfully in love, two figures merge, sharing one heart. This sensual, romantic sculpture is hand carved by Bali’s Nyoman Karsa. His sleek sense of artistic rhythm is admirable as slightly asymmetrical features accentuate the couple’s union.
Wood statuette, ‘Pilgrimage to the Sea’ Today’s Price: $332.95
With rippling muscles apparent beneath his soft coat, a powerful horse canters easily across the beach. Ocean waves lap at his hooves while the sea breeze caresses his mane and tail. Carving the taut contours from suar wood, Nyoman Karsa sculpts an unforgettable portrait.
Mahogany sculpture, ‘Asian Elephant’ Today’s Price: $152.95
Dramatically sculpted contours evoke the true power of the Indonesian elephant. This example arrives adorned in a regal cloth, reflecting Nyoman Karsa’s Balinese heritage. Hand-carved from mahogany wood, the statuette makes a rewarding acquisition for the worldly interior.
Says Karsa, “Outside is the natural world; the lives of animals depend on human behavior. Numerous hunters travel around the world endangering the lives of animals, while only a few people concern themselves with finding the best way to save them from entirely disappearing. By creating animal statuettes I offer an alternative to animal lovers.”
Wood statuette, ‘Wild Beauty’ Today’s Price: $237.95
Galloping at full force against the Balinese breeze, this extraordinary horse is an admirable testimony to equine beauty. Made Karsa captures the strength and elegance of the horse with admirable artistry as he carves its image from suar wood. The spirited animal features eyes full of life, and the wood’s natural grain accents the stallion’s impressive musculature. Karsa confers dynamism to the statuette, making the ideal complement to a personal space.
Please note that Karsa will not always be able to provide the same coloring and grain of the piece as seen in the picture. However, this master carver will always provide a piece of excellent quality when using suar wood.

“I work from home, but participate in art exhibits. Even though my work has won awards, I continue working from home, which brings me a great deal of satisfaction. I enjoy it so much.
“I was born in Teresopolis. From the time I was a girl, I liked art and never stopped creating things. I painted a lot and took courses in painting, watercolor, studio classes with live models and several other courses. I learned little by little.
“In 1998, I began working in sculpture and found it easy, because I had a foundation in drawing. In the beginning, my inspiration came from nature and from models. Later on, I began creating from my own ideas, thoughts and feelings, and also let the materials that I know and use inspire me. Now I am freer, as I express my thoughts and let my ideas flow in my work.
“I am very happy to show my creations to the world through Novica. My work will be a little better known, and I look forward to seeing your reactions to it.”

Ceramic candleholder, ‘Tree of Life’ Decoration on sale > $76.46 (was $84.95)

Alberto Aparicio Canchari crafts an exuberant design known as the “Tree of Life.”
“I’ve been a ceramist since I was a child, as my parents taught me the craft. Later, I tried to develop my own pieces with a personal style. My main purpose is giving life to my creations, and I’ve achieved this through the expressions of their faces, aiming to reflect daily attitudes, Peruvian country scenes, even protests – and I’m satisfied and content. In the workshop I work full-time with my wife.
“Most of our pieces are hand-molded, as only the weight of the hand can give the right shape. We use clay and simple tools; paints and pigments are blended together to produce the required hues, like that of the skin. All are made to resist high temperatures. The process starts from when we mold the pieces, then we paint them, fire them, and at the end, just polish them.

Irish Claddagh Rings
IRISH CLADDAGH RINGS

Have you ever heard of this quote? “Let Love and Friendship Reign Forever” This is the meaning of the treasured Irish Claddagh Ring, which is steeped in 300 years of history.
The design of the Claddagh ring and even the way the ring is worn are all deeply rooted in Irish tradition.Today, the meaning of the Claddagh ring and the significance of wearing Claddagh rings has spread far and wide.
The Claddaugh ring is made and worn far beyond the small fishing village in Ireland where the tradition started, and the meaning of the ring stands as true today as many years ago.
The hands of the ring are shown holding the heart and the hands denote friendship and togetherness, the heart itself signifies love and the crown in the claddagh ring stands for loyalty. It is this meaning of the claddagh rings that make them an ideal choice for all occasions!
The Claddagh
Legend has it that the claddagh symbol was originated by Richard Joyce, a Galway seafarer kidnapped by pirates and sol into slavery in North Africa where he learned the art of goldsmithing.
When he was released, nothing could keep him from his beloved Galway where he returned to become a master goldsmith and where he created the Claddagh ring.
For centuries this was used as a wedding ring by the fisher folk of Claddagh village, which nestled outside the walls of Galway city in the west of Ireland.
Claddagh rings are worn as friendship, engagement or wedding rings depending on how they are worn:
1/Friendship – by placing the ring anywhere on your right hand.
2/Engagement – by placing the ring on third finger of your left hand with the heart pointing outwards.
3/Wedding – represented by wearing the ring on the third finger of your left hand with the heart pointing inwards towards your heart.

Zapotec Wool Rug
Zapotec Wool Rug Designs – Information
Find the Perfect Gift at NOVICA, gifts from under $30, $50, and $100
Zapotec Wool Rug Designs
Zapotec wool rug weavers in Teotitlan create a range of designs from modern motifs to Navaho geometrics to ancient and historical patterns. While designs may be new, traditions and cultural history are a source of inspiration.
Several designs are commonly seen in the Zapotec wool rug. Understanding their meaning adds to the enjoyment of the rug. There are pre-Columbian archeological sites around the Oaxaca valley that reveal very old designs. One seen in Mitla has a façade of stone carved in a geometric stepped fret. This design represents Zapotec concepts about life, nature, and eternity. Ruins from Monte Alban provide inspiration from glyphs and codices, the picture writing of the ancient Zapotecs.
The serrated diamond, (El Diamonte), is a universal pattern seen in weavings all over the world. The addition of a “maguey” (cactus) border has been found throughout Mexico dating back several centuries. El Diamonte is also called, “Zapotec Sun”.
The Caracol (snail) is a pattern taken from a 6th century pre-Columbian carving found in Teotitlan’s church. The caracol conceptualizes the circularity of human existence. Life starts in nothing and ends in nothing, with no beginning and no end, continuous and unending.
Other commonly used patterns are large central medallions known as “Sol of Oaxaca” or “Zapotec Estrella” (star), Relampagos (lightening), and Montanitas (little mountains).
Value of Zapotec Rugs
The handmade Zapotec wool rug from Teotitlan have achieved international recognition for their quality, design, and cultural tradition. These rugs are highly collectable and are a valuable investment.
