Meditation Techniques And Healing

If you find yourself struggling with major health problems, or even the daily aches and pains of a stressful life, imagine being able to find true relief through the practice of healing meditation. It can happen! The healing meditation process uses various techniques to allow you to place yourself in a meditative state, focused upon healing issues. These issues may range from insomnia to pain management to stress reduction. Practitioners swear that the use of healing meditation can even help people recover more quickly from major surgery.

Most practitioners of healing meditation techniques utilize some combination of techniques for relaxation and focus. Many of these techniques have been used in stress management and self-hypnosis for decades. Placing them in the context of healing meditation creates a powerful focus on the mind-body connection and allows a sense of self-healing to begin.

Healing meditation techniques.

Following are some of the most common techniques used in healing meditation.

Relaxation exercises.
Part of the act of meditation is placing your body in a more relaxed state. A tense body and a tense mind go together, and you can begin to relax both by learning simple techniques to calm your breathing, muscles, and thoughts. Common relaxation techniques include deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and the use of music. One of the simplest relaxation exercises uses cleansing breaths: Take 4-5 deep breaths. Begin by inhaling slowly and deeply. Hold the breath for at least 5-10 seconds. Then slowly release the breath. As you release it, imagine all sickness or pain leaving your body with each cleansing breath.

Creative visualizations.
Creative visualizations allow us to use the power of the mind to envision anything that is the focus of change. For example, if you want to rid yourself of pain, you can start by visualizing the pain itself as a shadowed place that needs light and warmth. Then imagine a glowing ball of warm light that travels over the pain, releasing it from the cold shadows. By positively visualizing events either symbolically or literally, your mind can bring actual change to your body.

Positive affirmations.
Along with visualizations, positive affirmations can effectively increase your power of more positive thinking. A positive affirmation is a simple statement you say about something you want to be or have happen. It is always stated in positive terms. For example, rather than saying, “I’m going to stop having so much trouble sleeping all the time,” you might say: “My body feels ready for rest, and I am about to sleep peacefully.”

Repetitive sounds.
For centuries, Eastern philosophers have taught the value of using repetitive sounds to enter a deeper meditative state. Techniques may range from the repetitive “ohm” of the transcendental meditation practitioner to the kirtan kriya chants of the yogi to drumming meditation. What these techniques have in common is the ability to clear the mind of everything but the object of its focus during the meditation.

Research studies have shown that meditation can reduce blood pressure, decrease stress, and improve patient attitudes. If you are willing to invest a every day in the practice of one or more healing meditation techniques, you may find that meditation becomes the proverbial apple a day you need to keep traditional medicine away from your door.

Healing Meditation – How To Do Healing Meditation?

healing meditation is used to heal you or to heal others. When you are just starting out, it is best to focus on your own healing first. What we’re going to see here is the self healing.

You can help your body to recover from an illness or disease by doing healing meditation.

How to do healing meditation?

Start your meditation process as usual.

Then, once you are happy that you are in a relaxed state, you can start your healing meditation.

In your mind, fill the area that needs healing with a bright healing light. Once you get proficient at this technique, you can research the different colors that are said to help even more with the healing process. But as a starter, use a bright white light for your healing process.

Flood the area that needs healing with the bright white light. See everything brilliantly illuminated. Then visualize the affected area starting to heal and return to its regular, i.e., 100% healthy state.

Some people find it helpful to visualize their white blood cells attacking the harmful elements in the affected area.

Some other people find that they can build their own construction team in their visualization. This team of miniature experts goes about the process of reconstructing the affected area and putting it back to normal.

The power of this visualization is fantastic. Let your mind run riot while you perform your healing meditation.

See the area that needs healing transform into a completely healed part of you. If you find it difficult to “see” the area, then just imagine what it would feel like if that part of your body was completely healed and working perfectly. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get all the details completely right. Just get a sense of what will happen. Your mind is powerful enough to fill in the gaps – all you are doing is telling it the direction that you would like it to take.

You can lead a healthy life using this healing meditation.

Meditations: A Simple Healing Meditation Practice

The role of meditation in essence is to assist you in maintaining your mind and body. The power of our mind is often overlooked in Western Society where as in other parts of the world like Asia, they recognize the power of the mind to assist in healing your body. This meditation is one that you can use to simply help heal you body. I should note that it is not a substitute for other medical assistance, but should be used in conjunction with traditional medicine.

The first part of this meditation is to get you into the meditation position. For this meditation either the seated meditation position or sitting on a chair will be appropriate. I also recommend for this meditation that you use Baroque Style Meditation music played at 60 beats per minute as we want your brain to be in its optimum mode to help with the healing process.

Whilst you are seated make sure that your back is straight, shoulders straight and your head should be upright. This will ensure that you can breathe clearly through your nose. Begin the healing meditation with simple breathing meditation that is light breathing out through your nose. As you are doing this clear your mind of yours thoughts. Once you have got to the required state of relaxation it is now time to begin the Healing Meditation.

In your minds eye, open your mind to you being seated by a beautiful flowing stream with the most brilliant colors of green around you. You should feel the sun touching your face so gently. As your mind is opening your imagination you should feel the stress and pain in your body slowly sink away into the ground. As that tension and stress flows into the ground, you should feel renewed energy fill the void of that tension.

Now the healing can begin. As the tension and stress slips away and the new energy comes into your body, focus that energy on parts of your body that have been in pain or hurting. Feel the energy encapsulate those points of pain and the healing to begin. To help you further with the healing process, now put your feet into the stream. Feel the rushing water pass by and the tension flow away.

Continue this meditation till you feel refreshed and vibrant. When you come out of the meditation session spend a sitting on the flow or in the meditation position you chose and simply feel the renewed energy in your body. This is worth doing at least once a week to help you renew the energy in your body.

7 Health Ailments Eased By Healing Meditation

Do you suffer from skin conditions such as psoriasis? Are you battling blood pressure and heart disease? Do have trouble controlling your anxiety? I thought at the time meditation would never work for me. It just sounded so intriguing, though. This exercise has been practiced for over 5,000 years and every religion incorporates some version of it, so there must be something to it, I thought. One version involved simply getting comfortable, closing one’s eyes, and repeating a simple word over and over, apparently offering practitioners the joys of complete relaxation and a sense of calm. Those monks in Tibet looked pretty relaxed and the Dalai Lama always seemed to be smiling, despite living in exile for almost 40 years at that time.

I had never felt calm in my life. Always an anxious kid who couldn’t sit still in class and felt claustrophobic if I sat down for more than five minutes, the allure of a sense of calm had intrigued me since high school. In my mid-twenties, I knew anxiety and stress had already begun to take its toll over the years. Migraines. Back pain. Hives. Ulcers at 19 years old. Acid reflux. Asthma attacks. Chewing the blanket on my bed during sleep until it was shredded (no, I’m not kidding). But meditation just wouldn’t cut it. Not that I didn’t try over and over again. My mind just wouldn’t let me sit still for more than a , never mind keep intruding thoughts out of my head. I had read that reducing stress was important to health, however, so I kept looking for an answer.

Then came the Internet seeping into the relative mainstream in the early to mid-90′s. Web browsers like Netscape allowed casual users to search for topics and “surf” around and look at web pages. Back then, the Net seemed to be mostly about email, porn sites, early users of AOL, first generation attempts at corporate advertising, and a lot of, let’s say, “niche” communities, often selling their wares on rudimentary websites. One of those communities was the New Age crowd. The New Age Movement, an early embracer of the Internet, is “a social collective phenomenon and a spiritual nature movement that seeks universal truth through the Oneness of Humanity. It combines aspects of spirituality, cosmology, esotericism, complementary and alternative medicine, various religious practices, and environmentalism.” (1) They seemed to discuss energy, collective consciousness, and inter-connectedness on their websites a lot, I noticed.

While I was surfing around the Internet looking for a solution to my relaxation dilemma, I came across something called a light-sound machine The product’s website, which clearly had New Age written all over it (celestial pictures of stars and planets, people wearing space-age glasses, and products with flashing lights and lots of buttons) advertised a product that promised to leapfrog the years of practice demanded by meditation and quickly place the user into a completely relaxed – or “altered” – state, wherein someone actually feels like they are floating outside of their own body. The website talked about the concepts of brainwave entrainment, audio-visual stimulation (AVS), Ganzfield, soundscapes, and binaural beats.

Weird, right?

I couldn’t resist. Within a few minutes I made my first Internet purchase in 1996: a relaxation light-sound machine.

Of course I couldn’t wait more than ten minutes to use it when it arrived. The box included a metal unit that looked like a cassette player from the 1970′s, headphones and eye shades with LED lights on the inside of them. I read the brief instructions, set my desired program on the unit (a “theta-alpha relaxed state” program for 30 minutes, whatever that meant), put the headphones and eyeglasses on, and pushed the start button. I could hear a faint beat in the headphones and, with closed eyes, saw flashing lights through my eye lids. I tried to breathe deeply from my abdomen (per the instructions) and counted 1-2-3-4, and so on. Within about 15 minutes I was more relaxed than I had ever been in my life. I couldn’t really tell if I was awake or asleep and dreaming.

Too good to be true?

Let’s Back Up: How We Can Measure Activity in Our Brains – Without All (Ok, Most of) the Science Speak

Most adults who have undergone typical physical exams at the doctor’s office are familiar with an EKG (or ECG) test. An EKG test, during which the doctor places several electrodes on our bodies, measures the electrical activity of the heart, can detect abnormal rhythms of or damage to the heart muscle. Accepting that measuring electrical activity of the heart can measure conditions of the heart is mainstream healthcare; the EKG test is central to cardiology.

Our brains produce electrical activity that can be measured as well, though most people have not undergone the test to measure brain activity, known as an EEG (with the exception of epileptic, seizure or brain injury patients). Like an EKG, electrodes are used, placed on the scalp with a conductive substance (like a gel) to measure electrical activity resulting from currents reflecting activity in our brains (I have not included a discussion here about the standard locations to measure various activity levels).

This activity can be shown graphically as waves at a certain “speed,” known as frequency.(2) As you might guess, the less activity in our brains (such as when we’re drowsy), the slower the waves generated; the more activity, (such as when we’re anxious), the faster the waves. Our brains are working with more intensity, creating more electrical activity, and we can measure that with an EEG. The EEG test, in fact, was first used on humans back in 1920. The list below demonstrates the perceived emotional state that is related to a particular frequency and the name of associated wave pattern.

Here’s Where it Gets Even More Interesting.

We can actually move the activity of our brains – and therefore change our emotional states – towards a certain frequency (say, a lower, more relaxed one) to match that of an outside stimulus, such as a repetitive sound or a visual cue like a flashing light at a certain frequency (again, similar to speed for purposes of this article).

There is one related auditory phenomenon with which all of us are familiar: music. Daniel J. Levitan in his recent fascinating book, “This is Your Brain on Music,” discusses how music and its numerous technical components – whether the compositions are by the Beatles, Mozart, Metallica, Aretha Franklin or Stevie Wonder, among many others – significantly impact the complex regions of our brain. (3) We all can relate to hearing a certain song from our past and – suddenly – certain emotions come up. If one enjoys rock music, a listener can feel “pumped up” and energized by the music’s loud, hard charging beats. As music and healing expert Steven Halpern explained to me, humans have been using sounds and beats for 25,000 years to alter states of consciousness.

Some Relaxation Tools Enable Us to Actual Target a Certain State of Emotion

Through several audio and visual tools, we can actually coax our brains into a certain emotional state, such as relaxation. As discussed, we accomplish this by using repetitive sounds and visual stimuli that are set at a certain frequency, such as at a “theta” speed. The first way to simply accomplish this is through a concept known as “binaural beats,” a complicated auditory phenomenon that takes place in our brains. Binaural beats occur when someone wears headphones and tones at slightly different frequencies are played in each ear. Our brains, however, will mix the two different beats into one. If the binaural beat is set to a certain frequency, our brainwaves will synchronize with those sounds (the technical term is “brainwave entrainment,” a term that initially made me think of science fiction and Stanley Kubrick’s haunting movie, “A Clockwork Orange”). However, binaural beat recordings, which can include sounds of nature over them, have been shown to bring about states of relaxation. (4) Using this type of product is as easy as buying a CD and listening to it with headphones.

By adding strobe lights to binaural beats, we create the light-sound machine that I initially mentioned was my entrée into the world of relaxation tools. This represents the second of the relaxation tools I review in this article. These products, sometimes called “mind machines,” use audio-visual stimulation (AVS) to bring about various states, such as relaxation, attention and sleep. They include goggles which the user wears with his or her eyes closed; the effect is the same through the eyelids and would actully be extremely uncomfortable if one’s eyes were kept open. AVS devices allow the user to select various programs focused on states of emotion or mood. Research has been conducted on light-sound machines and their positive impact on children with learning disabilities, impulsive behaviors, and anxiety. (5) It should be noted that flashing lights may not be appropriate for everyone. In fact, people with photosensitive epilepsy and other nervous disorders may experience seizures when using such as device (one source notes that one in 10,000 people using such a device may experience a seizure using the device.)

A third tool to bring about a state of relaxation is not much different than the sound-based tools discussed above, but I would like to profile a prominent cancer specialist in Manhattan who uses relaxation tools (along with advice on nutrition, supplements and other wellness modalities) together with mainstream treatment with his cancer patients. Mitchell Gaynor, M.D., a cancer specialist and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Weill-Medical College of Cornell University, has used an “integrative” approach to cancer for 15 years. He discusses this approach in his 2003 book, “The Healing Power of Sound: Recovery from Life-Threatening Illness Using Sound, Voice, and Music.”

Gaynor’s relaxation tool of choice? The metal (or crystal) singing bowl, which has aided Buddhist meditation, prayer and chanting for potentially thousands of years. By circling a bowl with a playing mallet, the bowl creates a rich blend of harmonic resonances and overtones. Along with simple meditative exercises, the long, droning sounds produced by the bowls can help bring about or intensify the meditative state discussed above. According to written reports, similar brain synchronization occurs when listening to the audio patterns of the bowls.

Gaynor discusses the stress reduction and Relaxation properties of the singing bowls, but in one article noted that “meditation with the bowls takes us outside of our own fears. And the patient at peace with himself puts up the best fight against cancer.”(6) Due to the popularity of such approaches with patients, as well increasing scientific research demonstrating the health benefits of stress management approaches, many cancer programs have incorporated the techniques and tools that Dr. Gaynor has been using for over 15 years.

A Few Relaxation Product Recommendations

In this section, I’d like to recommend a few products for you to consider. For each of the three examples, I offer a “high-end” and “bargain” product option and information on where to purchase them. I have personally used these products and, in some cases, have met or interviewed the providers. I am not receiving any commissions on sales of products due to this article; I simply have benefited from and enjoyed using them. Also, they are not the only products available in these categories. The Internet allows us to conduct product research and comparison shopping like never before. Disclaimer: all of these products (and any meditative experience) can create powerful emotions, evoke long-forgotten memories, and generally be jarring to someone experiencing such a profound experience for the first time. I suggest you work with a health professional who understands such products and conduct extensive research on any of the products you’re considering purchasing!!!!!!

Robert Monroe started conducting research on sound’s impact on states of consciousness back in the 1950′s, during a successful career in the radio broadcasting business. Monroe Products produces Hemi-Sync(R) audio products and its predecessor companies have been doing so since the early 1960′s. Monroe also started a non-profit Institute in 1985, which provides numerous on and off-site educational programs. Product Recommendation. Light-Sound Machine (AVS) Relaxation Products

David Siever of Mind Alive has been developing AVS products since 1984. Based in Alberta, Canada, Dave and his team hold many professional training and learning programs on AVS technology. He also has conducted extensive, published research on the effectiveness of AVS to treat a variety of conditions, such as ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, pain and others. I consider Dave Siever to be the person who has made the most extensive, research-based effort to bring light-sound technology into mainstream healthcare. Product Recommendation. The DAVID PALTM, an easy to use and small but comprehensive AVS device. Price: $260 plus shipping.

Bargain Option: MindPlace’s Sirius Light and Sound Machine. MindPlace has been in the AVS business for almost 20 years. Small and compact, this product is a great and economical way to start your AVS relaxation program. Price: About $99 plus shipping. Check around the Internet for the best price.

My recommendation is that you research to check if you can attend a group session in your area. Some yoga studios, for example, hold singing bowl groups. (Drumming circles are another option, as they involve repetitive beats and focused attention.) You’ll have a lot of fun at either event. You can pick up a singing bowl from literally hundreds of providers on the Internet. Prices range from less than $50 to more than hundreds of dollars to well over $1,000, depending on the materials used or whether it’s an antique from Tibet.

Basic Chakra Meditation  Grounding & Centering

Whether you are new to meditation or well experienced with yoga or tai chi, anyone can learn basic chakra meditation. Each has its own rewards and benefits. Unlike yoga or tai chi, anyone can practice chakra meditation since there is not the same physical aspect to it. Also, chakra meditation can be practiced almost anywhere. All you need is a quiet place where you will be undisturbed and about 15-20 minutes. Wearing comfortable, loose fitting clothing is recommended but not required.
Before beginning, it is important to ground yourself in order to get the full effect from the chakra meditation. Some people do this by walking through a lawn barefoot, reconnecting with nature. This can also be done by sitting cross-legged on the floor or sitting with your legs folded under you and concentrating on your breathing.

To help clear your mind in preparation for chakra meditation, first choose a focal point. If you are more comfortable with your eyes open, focus on a point on the floor 5-10 feet in front of you, but instead of looking directly at it, look through it. If closing your eyes is more comfortable, mentally focus on the spot between your anus and genitals. This spot is the location of the root chakra, the foundation of the chakra system. Allow your mind to clear. If you notice your mind starting to wander, gently guide it back to your focal point.

Breathe in and out slowly, making each breath deliberate. As you do this, you should feel your body and mind start to relax and center. Once completely relaxed, you will be ready to begin the chakra meditation. As a rule of thumb, it is not recommended to skip this step when practicing chakra meditation because a quiet mind and body is more open to the benefits and healing it provides.

If you only have a short amount of time in which to practice chakra meditation, it is recommended to set an alarm rather than trying to keep an eye on the time yourself. This will allow you to fully concentrate on the meditation without distractions. 20-30 minutes a day is the recommended time for meditation.

Proper grounding and centering before chakra meditation is so important it deserves its own article. A follow-up article will go into detail on various techniques and chants often used in general chakra meditation as well as how to open the different chakras.

Chakra Meditation – Take A Closer Look

There are many different styles of meditation and can be done for balancing chakras. Some of these can be done on your own; while others work best if you have a partner that can lead you through them. If you don’t have someone to work with you can always record yourself reading the meditation and play it back.

In one meditation you can connect a spirit animal to each of your chakras. This is a powerful meditation process that will give you a key to dealing with your chakras going forward. When you meet the animal guide for each chakra you can develop a relationship with that animal. This allows you to talk to the animal that guards your individual chakras when you notice that something is out of balance. Using this system can really help you work on chakra healing.

This meditation takes thirty to forty-five minutes, so make sure that you have enough time to devote to the entire process before getting started. You will need to get into a relaxed meditative state. Do this however you normally do.

Once you are fully relaxed bring your awareness down to your root chakra. See the energy center glowing red at the place where you legs come together. As you watch this space you will see the form of an animal start to take shape. When it is fully formed attempt to communicate with it. Ask it what messages it has for you in relation to your chakra healing. When you feel ready thank your ally and move into your sacral chakra.

Your awareness should then move into your pelvic bowl where your sacral chakra will glow in a bright orange ball. After a moment the shape of an animal will start to form. When it is fully formed talk to your sacral animal. Ask it what message it has for you in regards to your chakra healing. When you are ready thank your ally and move into your solar plexus.

Repeat this process for the solar plexus, the heart chakra, the throat chakra, the third eye chakra, and the crown chakra. Each energy center will have its own special animal ally and own special message for you. Give time to each ally to converse with you. Take a moment to ask any questions that you might have about balancing chakras, chakra healing, or each individual chakra.

If you are able take notes as you move through your chakra meditation, but if this is not possible for you try and remember as much as you can from your experience and write it down afterwards. You will be able to connect back to these animal allies whenever you need to. Checking in on their appearance and energy levels can give you real and concrete clues about the health of each chakra center.

This meditation can be done as often as you want. Most likely the animals will not change, but occasionally your chakra animal ally will change as you grow and heal. This is neither good nor bad. Once you start a relationship with your animal ally keep it up. There is much powerful information for you to learn from them.

The word chakra means “wheel of light” in the language of Sanskrit. The chakras are the body’s internal energy centers, and are aligned vertically near the spine. Energy enters the body through the head (the heavens) and the base (the earth beneath). The 7 chakras are vortex points where these forces mingle, with each producing a distinctive energy pattern. The purpose of the 7 chakras is to absorb, transform, and distribute the body’s internal energy, known by terms like prana, life force, or chi. Specific organs and body parts are associated with each chakra, as well as corresponding behavioral, emotional, and personality patterns. It’s important to note that the chakras are in constant interplay, and can really only be separated intellectually.

Similar to the principles of Feng Shui, energy can sometimes flow too strongly or too weakly, or be blocked entirely. Sometimes, chakras get “stuck” open or closed, and it’s important to uncover the root of this state for energetic balance.

Stop! Winter Blues

For this weeks meditation we are doing tings a bit differently!! I have found 2 articles about ways to battle the winter blues! Then I have added a guided meditation AND a yoga meditation…both are focused on making you feel better in the winter months!

The winter blues, or Seasonal Affective Disorder are a serious problem for some people and having ways of coping or helping can only help if you fight this battle!

Ten Tips For Winter Wellness

1. Go for a walk even when the weather is really cold – your body has to work overtime to get warm and you may burn up to 50% more calories than you would on the same walk in summer! But remember, go a little slower until you get warm and keep up the hydration.

2. If you find it hard to get motivated to exercise in winter…just think of spring and how much harder it is to get back into shape rather than maintain your fitness throughout the winter.

3. Be aware of tendonitis and stress fracture if you don’t exercise in winter and expect to pick up where you left off after a whole winter with no exercise.

4. Instead of picking up a cup of hot chocolate to keep yourself warm, try a herbal beverage.

5. Gain an interest in indoor sports as opposed to cycling and jogging outdoors. Don’t forget that swimming at an indoor pool is an option for a great cardio workout!

6. The cold air and indoor heaters can dry out your skin. Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water each day and use moisturizers throughout winter.

7. Buy some indoor plants to soften up the dry atmosphere caused through heating. Indoor plants give off moisture and oxygen and the colours will brighten up a dull day outside.

8. Caught a cold or flu? If the infection is above the neck (nose, throat) you could be OK to complete a low intensity workout. However, if you have symptoms that are worse than an average cold (chest congestion, muscle aches), exercise will only make you worse and delay your recovery. Rest is the best medicine.

9. Wear the right clothes when exercising in winter. Polypropylene is the perfect fabric to wear underneath a tracksuit, which will provide great insulation but minimise moisture loss. Gore-Tex is a fabric used widely for providing protection from the rain and wind.

10. Feel like sitting on the couch with a video and snacking on a cold, wet day? Reach for a protein bar or packet of soy nuts instead of high energy, high fat snacks.

 

 3 Keys To Busting The Winter BluesLIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

No, I’m not recommending that you make your own independent film this Winter. Stay with me here and it will all come to light!

Do you literally find yourself getting “sick and tired” at this time of year, and maybe a little depressed as well? You’re not alone! 78% of the North American population experiences increased fatigue, stress, illness, weight change and depression during the “blues” months of November to April.

Don’t despair! There are simple, easy ways to sail through the season with more JOY, CHEER and EASE!

Lights:

It’s no accident that the Winter holidays involve lights…,,,the Jewish Menorah, Christmas lights and candles, etc. When the days are shorter with less light, seratonin levels go down and depression levels and weight tend to go up. Studies have shown that the “winter blues” or SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is caused by less sunlight rather than temperature changes. So what’s the solution? Here are a few.

1.Get as much real daylight as you can. If you work inside and especially under fluorescent lights, take your breaks outside. Take a quick walk outside at lunch. Park a distance from your destination. Even a of being out in the daylight can make a significant difference.

2.Use full-spectrum lighting in your home and your office. I often recommend that clients replace the fluorescent lights at work with full-spectrum bulbs whenever possible. I used to get migraines almost every year starting in early November. No more! I put daylight halogen lamps in my office, living room and bedroom and….VOILA! No more migraines. The minor cost of keeping the lights a little brighter at night and in the early morning is well worth it. Whatever you do, avoid sitting in a darkened room watching TV or at the computer. Keep the lights on.

Camera (not really):

Think of your mind as a camera, as your own on-going video or movie. Our subconscious and nervous systems do not distinguish between physical reality and our imaginations. So visualize, visualize, VISUALIZE!

1.Take a few minutes each day or throughout the day to close your eyes and see the entire inside of your body full of light, every cell lighting up. Any internal or external images of light will work. See yourself at your favorite beach with sunlight drenching every inch of your body. See yourself playing tennis or any other warm weather activity on a sunny, summer day. You’re the director here. You get to be anywhere you want, doing anything you love. In your mind, fill yourself and your surroundings with light. This is POWERFUL!

2. This part is so important that it gets it’s own number. When you visualize, FEEL! Feel all the physical sensations and emotions that you would if you were really in the place or situation you are imagining….the warmth, the movement, the freedom, the contentment, the deLIGHT! Using all our physical senses and emotions creates a much more powerful physiological and psychological response to mental images.

Action (really):

Even without the “blues”, our bodies and metabolisms tend to slow down in the winter months. It’s only natural. And, of course, there’s all that Holiday eating! You know that you’re going to over-indulge at this time of year. You always do (and you’re in good company – the rest of us!)

1.Be pre-emptive. Start increasing your activity now, before the major eating begins.

Add 5 minutes to your treadmill time or any workout time. If you’re not exercising, start!

Do some side and back leg lifts while you’re standing at the stove or waiting for the microwave. (I do this compulsively now, and my thighs and behind are very grateful.)

When you come home, go up and then down and then up the stairs again…with the groceries or shopping bags.

When Holiday shopping, park at the far end of the parking lot (like you have a choice!) You’ll get more exercise and daylight.

Take a walk with the family or friends after that big holiday meal or party.

“When you get the chance to sit it out or dance, I hope you DANCE.”

2.Whatever you do, don’t compound the over-indulging with beating yourself up about it. If you’re like the rest of us, you are likely to gain a few pounds over the winter. Big deal! EnJOY yourself, and just do what you can, when you can.

A quick note about that upcoming New Year’s resolution to lose the holiday weight:
Winter is by far the worst time of year to try to lose weight. It goes counter to your body’s natural rhythms and tendencies. (Think hibernation!) Rather than setting yourself up for failure, do what you can to avoid the weight gain to begin with. Staying active before and during the Winter will set up your mind and metabolism to lose the weight more easily when Spring rolls around.

Keep your mind and thoughts LIGHT! EnJOY! Be of good CHEER, and when you want to bust the winter blues, remember…………

Power Yoga: Physical Activity and Meditation

Health is the real wealth of an individual. Good health does not mean the absence of physical illness but also the lack of mental and social illness. A healthy person can properly survive and easily cope with the difficulties and stress of daily living. Incorporating regular physical activities, nutritious diet, and refraining from alcohol and cigarettes are necessary in maintaining a fit and healthy body. Yoga is a physical activity that has been used in the ancient times to alleviate health problems associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, shallow breathing, backaches, chronic illness, and many other forms of discomfort. Nowadays, Yoga has gone from a spiritual discipline practiced by many in the Far East, into a mainstream exercise routine that has been taught in many gyms . Other researches suggest that yoga may promote relaxation and reduce distress.

A new form of yoga that focuses on a more fitness-based approached has been developed. It is called Power Yoga, a method closely modeled after the Ashtanga style of practice. The term Power Yoga became widely used in the mid-’90s when many yoga teachers tried new ways to make Ashtanga Yoga more accessible to the western audience. Both Power and Ashtanga Yoga focuses on strength and flexibility. The only difference between the traditional method and Power Yoga is that the latter does not require the performance of a series of poses. It took the basics of yoga and and gave it a dose of aerobics to tone the muscles, sharpen focus, and strengthen the heart.

Other known benefits of practicing Power Yoga include:

Improved strength, endurance, and stamina
Tighter abs, legs, and arms
Helps release physical tension
Helps maintain good and proper posture
Serves as a good warm up for athletes
Improves an athlete’s overall performance

Power Yoga is a very accessible exercise. To practice this new yoga method, all that is needed is a flat floor surface, a mat or towel, and enough overhead space to extend the arms. It can be performed by individuals of different ages and level of physical condition. However, not all poses should be attempted by everyone. Proper posture and alignment should always be maintained during stretch or posture to avoid injuries. These activities should be stopped when there is fatigue, pain, or dizziness. In addition, the mental component of yoga is as important as its physical activities. Concentration and meditation should not be taken for granted. Yoga should be done with an open and gentle mind when one performs yoga positions and posture. Impatience, self-criticism, and comparing oneself with others may hamper the improvement of one’s physical and mental health.

Individuals who want to engage in physical activities like yoga should consult doctors and other health professionals before taking yoga classes. Certain injuries to the wrist, back, and ankles may prevent some individuals from practicing yoga postures and positions. Furthermore, yoga should be practiced with care and precaution. Some people have reported injuries that were acquired by executing yoga postures without focus, or by attempting difficult positions without working them gradually or by not having proper supervision. Oftentimes, beginners complain of muscle soreness and fatigue after engaging in yoga. These effects may disappear with continuous practice. Yoga is a great way to strengthen the and body and improve overall health.

Meditation and Relaxation

In today’s world people are just go go go and often do not take to breathe, de-stress, and relax! This is even worse through the holiday season!

So today I am focusing on meditations on relaxation as well as relaxation techniques as everyone deserves a break each day even if it is only for a couple of minutes!

If you’re thinking meditation means twisting your body into an uncomfortable position and uttering “oohs” and “omms” for an hour, guess again.

Any repetitive action can be a source of meditation, says Herbert Benson, MD, author of The Relaxation Response and director emeritus of Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

This includes walking, swimming, painting, knitting — any activity that helps keep your attention calmly in the present moment.

When you catch yourself thinking about your job, your relationship or your lifelong to-do list, experts say to simply let the thought escape, and bring your mind back the repetition of the activity. Try it for just 5 to 10 minutes a day and watch stress levels drop.

There are many meditation, breathing and relaxation techniques that you can learn to use to promote relaxation and relieve stress. The deeper and slower that you breathe the more relaxed and sedated you will become. This is the basis of Meditations!

Sleeping with the window open will help the air to circulate in your bedroom and fill your lungs with fresh air. Relaxation techniques will help your body to wind down and prepare for the sleep cycle.

Try this when you first get into bed:

1.Take a deep breath.
2.Breathe in through your nose and visualize the air moving down to your stomach.
3.As you breathe in again silently count to four.
4.Purse your lips as you exhale slowly.
5.This time count silently to eight.
6.Repeat this process six to ten times.

The results of this breathing technique are immediate. You will feel your shoulders and arms relaxing. Your chest will feel less constricted and you will feel less stress and tension.

Practice this breathing technique on a daily basis so that it becomes a natural routine for you and helps to induce natural sleep.

As well as using breathing techniques to encourage natural sleep you can try several relaxation exercises. The goal is to relax your mind and let your body unwind and surrender to sleep.

Try the following relaxation exercise/meditation before you get into bed:

1.Lay on your back on the floor with your feet slightly apart, your hands by your sides, and your palms turned upward.

2.Close your eyes and concentrate on every part of your body.

3.Begin at the top of your head and work your way down to your toes.

4.Start by feeling your forehead tense, then your eyes, face, and jaw.

5.Tense and release each muscle group, such as your shoulders and neck.

6.Give attention to each area of your body from the top of your head, down through the trunk of your body, down along your legs, and ending at the tip of your toes.

7.Stay in this relaxed condition for a . Concentrate on your breathing and let all worry and stress dissipate from your mind and body. Make sure that your breathing comes from deep in your stomach and flows slowly and evenly.

8.Stretch slowly before standing.

The above exercise will tell your body and mind that it is okay to settle down, leaving behind thoughts of worry, fear, and stress.

There are many more techniques and exercises available to promote deep breathing and relaxation. You will have to find what method works best for you.

Your goal is to recognize that deep breathing and concentrated relaxation are tools available for you to achieve natural sleep as well are the tools of MOST meditations.

Is your mind too talkative to meditate?

Try creating a peaceful visualization, or “dreamscape.”  To start, simply visualize anything that keeps your thoughts away from current tensions. It could be a favorite vacation spot, a fantasy island, that penthouse in New York City — or something “touchable,” like the feel of your favorite silk robe or cozy sweater.

The idea is to take your mind off your stress, and replace it with an image that evokes a sense of calm. The more realistic your daydream — in terms of colors, sights, sounds; even touch and feel — the more relaxation you’ll experience. And with deep relaxation comes meditations like the one I have below!!

 

Meditation to Relax

This meditation is to allow the mind to relax
To relax the mind
We need to let go of stresses
That is causing friction within
As we begin to relax the mind
Try to visualize
That you are sitting on the banks of a stream
And I am a peaceful observer
And the stream is flowing with the thoughts in my mind
Some positive some negative
Some necessary some unnecessary
But I relax
And just watch the thoughts flow by
Like a stream
I watch these thoughts
And I realize that I am separate from them
And I am relaxed knowing that
I just let them flow by
And do not get attached to the thoughts
Sitting on the bank of the river

This meditation is the first one I ever did! I did not think I could “quiet my mind” enough for meditations of any kind. I proved myself wrong that day!

So this is a great beginner meditation…

Flame Meditation

Method One:

1. Light a candle and stare at the flame for 2 minutes. Make sure your attention does not wander.

2. Close your eyes and place your hands in relaxed cupped position, palms over your eyes and concentrate on the imprint of the flame in the darkness. The image will tend to move across your area of vision. Keep looking for it and bring it back and keep concentrating on it for four mintues.

3. Relax and empty your thoughts and tune into your breathing for a , concentrating only on each breath

What this exercise does:
This exercise prepares the mind for one-pointed concentration, which is so important to any spiritual workings. With the average person, thoughts are scattered and dissipate into nothing. With the trained mind that can concentrate intensely, the thoughts are single-pointed and focused like a laser and have power.

100% concentration makes the difference in astral workings. One’s will is also developed with this exercise as a powerful will does not give into distraction. Do not become frustrated or impatient with yourself. It is normal for thoughts to creep in to distract you in the beginning. Total concentration takes time and is one of the most difficult aspects of training the mind.

Method Two (intermediate):

1. Focus on the flame for several minutes

2. Close your eyes and place your hands in relaxed cupped position, palms over your eyes and concentrate on the imprint of the flame in the darkness. The image will tend to move across your area of vision.

3. Keeping your eyes closed, try to enter the imprint. You will find the imprint begins to compact and change color. The bright image will change to pink, then to red and grow dark.

4. Repeat the exercise if you wish.

What this exercise does:
This exercise trains the mind and third eye to direct spiritual energy.
